Free AI tools are easy to recommend when they really are free. Google’s latest Canadian student offer is more complicated in one important way: it gives eligible college and university students 12 months of Google AI Plus at no charge, but it also asks them to set up a payment method for what happens afterward.
Google Canada announced the offer on October 28, 2026. Eligible post-secondary students can claim the year-long plan before December 31, 2026. Google says it includes higher Gemini usage limits, AI features in Google apps, 400 GB of storage and access to study tools such as notebooks, quizzes and interactive visual explanations.
What students actually get
The new student hub can help turn uploaded course material into study notebooks, identify gaps with practice questions and organize upcoming deadlines. Google also highlights conversational research through Gemini Live. These tools may be useful for working through unfamiliar material, but they are not substitutes for checking citations, understanding an assignment or following a school’s academic-integrity rules.
Set the cancellation reminder before the first study session
The important detail is in Google’s offer terms. A valid payment method is required, and unless the student cancels, the subscription automatically renews after the free year at $6.99 per month in Canada or the then-current price, plus applicable taxes. That makes the offer potentially valuable, but not a permanent free account.
If you sign up, save the date of your trial’s end and review the cancellation terms while they’re fresh. Students should also confirm eligibility and any school-account limitations directly with Google before counting on a feature for coursework.
There is no need to treat every AI subscription as a must-have. The better question is whether the features save meaningful time without taking over the learning. A year is plenty of time to find out—provided the renewal doesn’t sneak up on you.
